Takeshi Kitano’s return to the ultra-violent world of Yakuza film has been, perhaps, misnamed by its writer-director. Outrage conjures up a sense of injustice, of a rejection of the almost normalized criminal behavior depicted in the film which sees Japanese crime syndicates flooding the streets with drugs, gambling, and of course, (this being Kitano)ample amounts of blood. “Outrage” brings to mind a sense of defiance and rejection that is absent here. No, this movie would be more aptly titled “Disgust:” Kitano’s film drips with a poisonous hate of the characters on-screen, from the thuggish foot soldiers, to the wily family boss, Chairman Sekuichi (Soichiro Kitamura), to even Kitano’s mid-level enforcer Otomo. There’s neither nostalgia or sympathy for any kind of imaginary criminal code: loyalties are inevitably overruled by profit, oaths and bonds are only worth the breaths it took to make them (and last about as long).

Tracing what seemed to be a few months’ span in the life of a fairly prosperous clan, Outrage shows us what happens when criminals are allowed to do what they are inclined to do: lie, cheat, steal, and kill, and not only are the cops helpless, they’re more often than not complicit. The trouble all starts when the Chairman tasks underling Boss Ikemoto (crime flick regular Jun Kunimura) to break ties with the latter’s blood brother, Murase (Renji Ishibashi), whose expanding territory is dirtying things up with its drug business. Of course, Ikemoto has been splitting the drug take with Murase, but to keep up appearances, he still has Otomo (Kitano) stir things up with Murase’s gang. One thing leads to another and it’s all-out war with Murase’s gang, with the Chairman and Ikemoto at the top claiming that it’s just underlings getting out of control, while prodding them to force Murase out.
At this point, you would assume that Otomo’s character would be the bastion of Yakuza honor, holding some kind of imaginary moral line. We’ve seen it to an extent in the brilliant Sonatine and the mostly shaggy Brother, both by Kitano. But whereas both of those films portrayed Kitano’s characters as–well, if not lovable, then likeable–criminal heroes, Outrage shows the Yakuza mid-level boss for what he is: a pimp, a bully, a blackmailer, and a killer. It should probably come as no surprise then that the relentless grimness of the picture makes it something less than an easy film experience. Indeed, there’s not even reallymuch in the way of a story here, simply a series of episodes where the families steadily and mercilessly chew away at each other until there’s little left but bone. It’s less artfully realized than many of Kitano’s other films in the same genre, and there’s no character to really invest oneself in throughout the viewing. They’re scum, every one. But then, that’s really the purpose of the movie, isn’t it: to peel back the layers of myth and show them for what they are.In that regard, the movie succeeds. Even if it’s lesser Kitano, it’s still a notable, watchable film for the raw disgust it’s willing to put onscreen. n a ruthless battle for power, several yakuza clans vie for the favor of their head family in the Japanese underworld. The rival bosses seek to rise through the ranks by scheming and making allegiances sworn over sake. Long-time yakuza Otomo has seen his kind go from elaborate body tattoos and severed fingertips to becoming important players on the stock market. Theirs is a never-ending struggle to end up on top, or at least survive, in a corrupt world where there are no heroes but constant betrayal and vengeance.TOutrage posterakeshi Kitano (Brother) is known as the master of Yakuza films (Japanese mafia films). Hell, I might go so far as to say that he is the Scorcese of Japan when it comes to well crafted organized crime flicks. That being said, Kitano’s new film Outrage (Autoreiji) is breath of fresh air in the Yakuza genre. It tells a twisted tale of deception, cruelty and what exactly happens when you mess with the Yakuza in this day and age.
Several subsidiary bosses gather at a lavish lunch with “Mr. Chairman,” the head of the ruling Sanno-kai crime organization which controls the Greater Tokyo area. Sannokai underboss Kato warns Ikemoto about his overt dealings with family outsider Murase, an old-timer with whom he recently made a pact in prison. In an effort to ease Mr. Chairman’s suspicions, Ikemoto asks fellow boss Otomo to do his dirty work for him by making a minor but obvious move against Murase.tomo’s actions are the start of a ruthless series of conflicts and betrayals. Before long, several yakuza clans are out for blood in their constant battle for power and money. The rival bosses fight to rise through the ranks by scheming and making short-lived allegiances. In this corrupt world where there are no heroes, it’s Bad Guy vs. Bad Guy in a spiraling outrage of gang
warfare…
Takeshi Kitano directed, wrote, edited and starred in Outrage. He’s a man of many talents and this film is an excellent return to the screen for the aging legend. The movie starts off with the discovery that Otomo’s henchman has struck a deal with the drug-dealing Murase (Renji Ishibashi) family. Since Otomo disapproves of this sworn bond, he takes matters into his own hands which results in a chain of constant violence, territories being invaded and people continually settling scores/repaying debts. The movie gets bloody real fast and it never lets up. Someone is constantly yelling, being beaten up or apologizing to someone else in hopes of remaining alive, even though their odds are slim. In a way, Outrage feels like a mix of The Godfather and Infernal Affairs (or The Departed) due to its treacherous nature, various storylines, and its violent tendencies. Once again, Kitano paints an accurate picture of the Yakuza and is relentless in making sure you understand how aggressive the various families can be.espite a having a solid story, for someone who doesn’t speak Japanese the beginning of this movie will feel really confusing and disjointed. There are a lot of names and stories thrown around in a short period of time, but if you’re patient and smart you will eventually see the pieces start to fall together ensuring the clarity you were hoping for. There is also a portion of the film which involves an ambassador from Ghana (I think) who is manipulated into working for the Yakuza. There is some very dry humor here that results from the various scenes he is featured in but the only purpose was to show why the Yakuza should be feared by outsiders. Kitano makes that very clear when the ambassador declines to work with them and one man states, “you know you’re messing with the Yakuza, right?” I didn’t think it was necessary to go this far but the point was made for those who aren’t familiar with the Japanese mafia.

The aptly named Outrage doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the ‘rage’ part of the name. It’s got enough killing and body decapitation to impress any crime or horror fans with a solid story to coincide with it. While the acting is inconsistent and the film can get a little confusing at times, the movie ends up being completely worth your while and a must see for Japanese cinephiles.
